Characteristics

Avient K2564 ASI Nova Base is a multi-purpose specialty plastisol base designed for creating dry-flake glitter effects and other specialty screen printing surfaces. When combined with glitter particles, Nova Base penetrates into the fabric while leaving the glitter particles exposed at the surface, producing a distinctive dry-to-the-touch effect with excellent sparkle and visual definition.

The specialized formulation helps glitter particles retain their sharp edges, shine, and clarity instead of becoming heavily encapsulated by the ink base. This makes Nova Base an excellent choice for creating high-impact glitter graphics on both light and dark garments.

Nova Base can be mixed with up to 15% glitter particles, depending on particle size and the desired finished appearance. Avient recommends approximately .008" x .008" particles as a good starting point. The base can also be combined with pigments, finished inks, or other compatible particles to create customized textured and specialty-effect surfaces.

For a traditional dry-flake effect, Nova Base and the glitter mixture should be printed directly onto the fabric, allowing the base to penetrate the garment while leaving the glitter exposed. For a glossier appearance, the mixture can be printed over a flash-dried base plate.

The low-cure formulation can cure at temperatures ranging from 270°F to 320°F (132°C to 160°C), helping reduce heat exposure to temperature-sensitive fabrics while potentially lowering dryer energy requirements. Nova Base also provides excellent wash properties to help glitter remain securely attached to the finished design.

K2564 ASI Nova Base is non-phthalate and suitable for professional textile screen printing applications on 100% cotton, blends, and some synthetic fabrics.

Usage Tips
  • Thoroughly mix Nova Base with glitter particles before printing to ensure consistent particle distribution.
  • Glitter loading can be increased up to approximately 15% depending on particle size and the desired finished effect.
  • Use consistent, high-tension screen mesh and a sharp-edged squeegee for best printing results.
  • Select mesh count according to the size of the glitter or specialty particles being printed.
  • Use a heavy flood stroke followed by moderate squeegee pressure to maintain sufficient base at the surface for proper glitter adhesion.
  • Avoid excessive print pressure, which can leave too little base on the fabric surface to properly hold the glitter particles.
  • Print the Nova Base/glitter mixture directly onto the fabric when a dry-flake effect is desired.
  • Print over a flash-dried base plate when a glossier glitter appearance is preferred.
  • For multi-color designs, print Nova Base in the final print position whenever possible or flash after each print.
  • Because metallic and glitter particles can reflect infrared heat, a forced-air dryer is recommended. When using an electric dryer, additional dwell time may be required to achieve a complete cure.
  • Always verify the entire ink film reaches the required cure temperature before beginning production.
  • Test ink, fabric, cure conditions, and finished wash performance before production to confirm compatibility with the intended garment.
